Refuge of Hope Ministries: Pioneering a New Women’s Shelter in Canton
In a transformative effort to support homeless women in Stark County, Refuge of Hope Ministries is taking a bold step forward by breaking ground on a new women’s shelter. The $5.4 million project will not only provide a safe haven for 32 single women but will also address the multifaceted challenges that many of them face, ultimately aiding their journey toward independence and stability.
For Jo Ann Carpenter, the ministry’s director of development, this shelter represents a culmination of both professional dedication and personal compassion. “My heart breaks for them and has been breaking for a long time,” Carpenter shared, highlighting the critical need for resources and safe spaces for women who often fall through the cracks of the system. In Stark County, while emergency shelters exist, they remain insufficient in meeting the needs of the homeless female population. Carpenter noted, “The No. 1 question I receive is, ‘What about women?’”
With the new shelter scheduled to open next year, it will build upon the successful model established by Refuge of Hope’s existing facilities, which have catered to men in the area since 2001. By offering housing paired with counseling and job development services, the shelter aims to tackle root causes of homelessness through a holistic approach. Emotional trauma, often a recurring theme among homeless women, will be especially addressed, providing residents with access to trained staff who understand their unique experiences.
Beyond simply offering shelter, Refuge of Hope’s initiative includes additional services that extend to the wider community, such as showers and laundry facilities. These resources, although basic, play a vital role in restoring dignity to individuals experiencing homelessness. Carpenter explained, “Nice clean clothes, clean bodies, dignity restored. And that is just a touch point to talk to them about other services and provide other references and referrals to try to get them the help they need.”
The ground for the shelter will be broken on September 24, marking a significant milestone in the ministry’s ongoing commitment to elevating the well-being of marginalized individuals. It will be conveniently located adjacent to the Refuge of Hope Community Care Center, making access to vital services seamless for new residents.
CEO Scott Schnyders expressed his enthusiasm for the new facility, envisioning it as more than just a shelter. “We aspire to offer not just shelter, but a pathway to healing, self-sufficiency, and a renewed sense of dignity. By meeting the unique needs of each woman with compassion and respect, we aim to help them reclaim their independence and build a brighter future,” he stated. This vision includes connecting women to vital resources, including job training and mental health support, thus empowering them to foster stability in their lives.
Challenges faced by homeless women are often exacerbated by systemic barriers. Carpenter highlighted how issues such as a lack of communication devices prevent women from accessing crucial services, often forcing them to remain trapped in their situations. The Refuge of Hope aims to alleviate such challenges by offering a supportive environment that encourages women to seek help without judgment.
Statistics reveal a troubling reality: women represent approximately 20% of the homeless population. The new shelter will prioritize not only their immediate needs but will also lay the groundwork for long-term solutions, focusing on transitional housing and job placement. Residents can stay for up to 120 days, but the average stay is about 45 days, underscoring the importance of swift intervention to help women regain their footing.
As the ministry moves forward, it envisions not only providing shelter but transforming lives. By facilitating access to essential services and fostering a sense of community, Refuge of Hope Ministries aspires to rewrite the narrative for homeless women in Stark County. The initiative stands as a beacon of hope, showing that when compassion meets action, it can lead to tangible change.
The story of Refuge of Hope Ministries is not just about a building; it is a testament to the power of community, empathy, and the unyielding human spirit. As the ribbon is poised to be cut on this new project, the lives of many women are set to change—one step closer to independence, community, and restored dignity.
